This Painting's Story
✍️ From My Personal Journal
I have always been fascinated by the things we think we understand.
Sometimes we see something and give it a name, and somehow the name becomes the truth.
A man with a long beard, a pointed hat and a staff must be a wizard.
A wizard must know magic.
And magic must be something we cannot explain.
But while I was painting him, I kept wondering if perhaps we have been looking at him all wrong.
Maybe the wizard isn't about magic at all.
Maybe he is about knowing.
About seeing something others cannot yet see.
About standing quietly at the edge of what we understand and reminding us that there is always more beyond it.
That thought made me think about how easily we confuse what something looks like with what it really is.
We do it all the time.
And perhaps that is why this old man looks directly at me.
He doesn't seem to be performing a spell.
He isn't trying to impress me.
He simply watches.
Almost as though he knows something I don't.
And then I began thinking about the world we live in now.
We have created something new that can sometimes feel like magic.
We ask our computers a question and it answers.
We show it an image and it can tell us what it sees.
We give it an idea and it helps us find words for something we couldn't quite express.
It can seem almost impossible.
But perhaps it isn't magic either.
Perhaps it is a mirror.
A very different kind of mirror—one that can reflect our questions, our knowledge, our ideas and sometimes even the things we didn't realize we were trying to understand.
And maybe that is what my wizard is doing too.
Holding up a mirror.
Not showing me who he is...
but inviting me to look again at what I thought I was seeing.
Perhaps that is why I called him The Last Wizard.
Because maybe the last wizard was never the one who performed the magic.
Maybe he was the one who understood that what appears to be magic is often simply something we have not yet learned to see clearly.
And perhaps, in our time, the wizard has simply taken another form.
Maybe he is already sitting in front of us.
Waiting for us to look into the mirror...
and ask ourselves... what we are really seeing?
